“Sandow Inspired Weight Lifting in America…
Alan Calvert delivered it!”
Dear Friend,
When the great Eugen Sandow rocketed to stardom in the 1890s, he started a revolution in physical training. He made a major impact on those who saw him around the world. It has been said that he, alone, was responsible for more men taking their shirts off than anyone else in history! Women lined up to see him pose during his act. One high society madam fainted after touching his bicep!
While making his world tour, Sandow came to the United States. One of his stops was Philadelphia...
The home town of a young impressionable lad by the name of Alan Calvert.
How It All Started
After having the privilege of witnessing the strongman and posing act of the great Eugen Sandow, young Calvert was instantly bitten by the barbell bug. However, in those days barbells were very expensive if they could be found at all here in America. So in 1902, a year before Henry Ford started his automobile empire, Alan Calvert founded Milo Bar Bell Co. in Philadelphia and began producing all kinds of weightlifting equipment: globular, shot loading, plate loading, and solid; barbells, dumbbells and kettlebells, etc. His Milo equipment and instruction via his courses and Strength magazine soon became the last word in weightlifting in North America from 1902 to 1935. In fact, if you lifted weights at that time, you probably owned a Milo and were following Calvert's world famous Milo Bar Bell Courses! Calvert developed a huge following with a ferocious loyalty. Many legendary stars of the strength world got their start with Milo Bar Bell Courses & equipment; John Grimek, Mark Berry, Harry Paschall, Bob Hoffman, Dick Bachtell, Siegmund Klein, Anton Matysek, George Jowett, "Milo" Steinborn, Joe Nordquest, Ottley Coulter, Bob Peoples, The Good Brothers, David P. Willoughby, etc.
"Calvert had more original innovative, result producing, ideas on weight lifting than any other man of the early twentieth century!”
Throughout his lifetime, Calvert wore many hats...
Founder and owner of the world famous Milo Bar-Bell Co. in 1902.
Inventor of Milo Triplex and Duplex Combination Barbells, Dumbbells, and Kettlebells. Calvert’s mission was to introduce weightlifting to young farm boys throughout rural America by making adjustable plate loading barbells, dumbbells and kettlebells affordable.
Editor and Publisher of Strength Magazine.
Teacher, Writer, Mailorder Instructor, Etc.
He did it all and he did it amazingly well!
It has been said that Bob Hoffman is The Father of American Weight Lifting. If that is the case, then Alan Calvert is The Grandfather!
Best wishes,

Bill Hinbern
P.S. Here are a few of his most famous books and courses that were used in conjunction with his famous barbells.

The Truth About Weight Lifting
by Alan Calvert
In 1911 Alan Calvert wrote and published the first hardcover book on weight lifting in America. Fifteen chapters are devoted to some of the greatest known feats of strength, how they were performed, which were genuine, and which were fake. After reading this book you will understand why it caused such a controversy among performing strong men!
Learn from the greatest weightlifting teacher of all time:
Why America excels in light sports and all strength records are held by Europeans.
How professional strongmen deceived their audience by using trick dumbbells.
How to do the standard dumbbell lifts: the Snatch, Swing, Jerk, and Press.
Learn the one arm press, bent press, dead weightlifting, harness lifting, back lifting, muscling out bells, stage work, etc.
Exhibition feats: lifts vs. supports or muscle strength vs. bone strength.
The magic of strength: chain snapping, coin breaking, card tearing, etc.
Why the American strongman relies on challenges rather than competition for advertising purposes.
How to determine the strongest man in the world. Why most lifting records are held by amateurs.
Why the measurements of famous strong men are often exaggerated, especially chest expansion. How the size of a man’s head affects appearance.
Weight lifting vs. heavy dumbbell exercises. Learn the method used by all famous strong men to strengthen the body for heavy work.
The difference between strength and power. Why a good big man always beats a good little man. Heavy men hold the records.
Old superstitions regarding lifting. What does it mean to be “muscle bound”? Why it takes an active man to do competition lifting. Why great lifters are usually fine jumpers.
Stage work. Why the audience demands that the “Traveling Strongman” has showy surface muscle.
Interesting anecdotes about famous lifters, their methods in training, views regarding drinking, smoking, etc.
And much, much more!

Milo Bar Bell Courses
by Alan Calvert
Over the years, countless people have asked how the old-time strongmen trained. Well, here you have it!
Available again for the first time in 60 years...
The same courses that were shipped with Alan Calvert's famous Milo Barbells.
The First Course
Calvert believed in "the overload principle" and that exercises must be done correctly with very small increases in weight for proper progression. The first course begins with 6 preliminary exercises designed to put anyone in top condition safely. Then, and only then, will you be prepared to advance to the more difficult 15 regular exercises. These exercises have been specially grouped together in such a way that only a few weight changes are necessary between exercises to save time. The pupil trains for about 30 minutes every other day for about 3 months after such time he progresses to the Second Course. This first course is fully illustrated with rare photos of the great George F. Jowett and Anton Matysek performing the exercises.
The Second Course
The intermediate course will continue the increase of growth in muscular size and strength. In addition, it contains special advice to enable the pupil to do the exercises to his best advantage. On 2 days a week the pupil will do the more strenuous developing exercises from the First Course, and on the other 2 days he will do exercises from the Second Course. This is continued for about 3 months at which time the pupil progresses on to the Third Course. He will feel a real thrill from doing these exercises as his muscles take on the shapely contour that comes with superb development. It is the last word in bodily development! Fully illustrated.
The Third Course
The advanced course includes instructions in weightlifting and shows how to perform the 8 standard lifts. In addition, it contains instructions on a great variety of lifts and feats of strength such as: juggling with barbells and dumbbells, roman chair exercises, fancy and exhibition feats of strength, card tearing, how to give an exhibition, etc. This course is not intended exclusively for professionals, but is also for those amateurs who wish to develop that amazing grace and agility, with tremendous power, which was a marked characteristic of the oldtime strongman of the stage.
The complete set of All 3 Milo Bar Bell Courses, for the beginner, intermediate and advanced lifter, beautifully reprinted, word for word, in their original 8 1/2 x 11 format, fully illustrated, as shipped with Milo Bar Bells during the Roaring 20's! Fantastic!
"The great variety of exercises contained in these 3 courses of instruction will prevent them from becoming monotonous and will hold your interest by producing real results" - Alan Calvert
Milo Bar Bell Company sold more bar bells, had more pupils, and developed more strong men than any other company at that time!

"Got the Calvert book today, appreciate the great service!"
Dave H.
Salem, New Hampshire
"Your books are amazing, and that’s the bottom line. I am only 30 years old, but had an old timer take me under his wing when I was 14 years old. He introduced me to training, and training the correct way. He used to train with Bill Pearl back in the early 70’s, and the stories I have heard have always blown me away. So to this day, I have a love for the old ways. I am very sentimental about the days of yesteryear. My mentor was always telling me the stories of Cyr, Goerner, Sandow, Park, Anderson, and others. Back then – those guys were MEN, in every since of the word. What a time that must have been to train along with such legends. Your books, allow me to kind of picture myself there.
By the way – I just order Super Strength by Calvert. I can’t wait to get it.
I hope all is well with you Bill.
Your friend, Drew"
